Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" derives it's title from a line spoken by Witch 2 in Act IV Scene I of Macbeth.
Bradbury's book is about a carnival that comes to town. It's not your usual carnival. This carnival is all about human frailty and evil. It's definitely a "be careful what you wish for" story.
Something evil arrived in Washington January 20th with the inauguration of Donald Trump as our 45th President. His carnival was blowing in for months.
The first indications we got of how different things would become was during the Republican primaries. The bizarre nature of the "debates". The rise of Donald Trump based upon nothing more than his personal demeaning of the other contenders.
After Trump became "candidate Trump", we were presented with a national campaign of dark rhetoric that ushered in a new wave of hatred across the nation.
Since the inauguration, we have watched the systematic destruction of our government. The decimation of our agencies and departments can be seen in what happened to the EPA and the State Department.
The appointment of incompetent people like Scott Pruit, Ben Carson, Rick Perry, Jeff Sessions, and Betsy DeVos to cabinet level positions is unprecedented.
Even Trump's pick of a running mate, Mike Pence and his appointment of people like Flynn, Bannon, Conway, Kushner, Miller, and Gorka is problematic. Add to those other people who have worked on the campaign, people like Page, Manafort, Stone, Gingrich, Giuliani, and Christie, and you have a truly strange brew.
Trump's cauldron is boiling over with calamity. Our nation is in jeopardy.
Vladimir Putin is truly the quintessential Mr. Dark. Exactly what Trump has traded in exchange for his presidency has yet to be exposed. So far, it doesn't bode well for the U.S. and our traditional allies.
Robert Muller appears to be our best hope - like Arthur, he is assembling a round table of knights to take on this dark threat - like Father Merrin, he is preparing for an exorcism for the ages - like Frodo he is making his way slowly and methodically to Mordor.
Hopefully, like in Bradbury's story, the American people will be snapped out of their trances when this page in our history is written. Hopefully, our Republic will survive what is clearly emerging as a foreign intrusion into the heart of our government.
